The Road Ahead: NYY vs. BOSThis is a critical stretch for the third-place Yankees. New York trails Tampa Bay by 7.5 games in the AL East. After their sweep of Boston, the Rays are 3.5 games up. After this weekend’s four-game series versus the Red Sox, New York hosts Tampa Bay for two games. Without a strong showing, the Yankees could be left for dead before the All-Star break.

He has a 1.00 ERA over the stretch. Pettitte was 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA against Boston last season … Giambi ranks in the American League's Top 10 in five major categories: home runs (5th - 18), on base percentage (6th - .403), slugging percentage (.562), on base plus slugging (4th - .964) and runs batted in (7th - 52).

Boston Red SoxFor the Red Sox: Boston has matched a season high by losing five straight, including a three-game sweep in Tampa Bay this week, to fall 3 1/2 games behind the Rays … The Red Sox are 3-2 against the New York this season, and it’s been Manny Ramirez who has done most of the damage. Ramirez is 10-for-19 with three homers and eight RBI. He’s currently hitless in his last 11 at-bats … 2B Dustin Pedroia is hot. He’s 25-for-44 (.568) during a 10-game hitting streak. Last night, he had four extra-base hits … Tonight’s starter Jon Lester, who will make his first career start at Yankee Stadium, is 3-0 with a 3.35 ERA in his last six starts … With David Ortiz out, right fielder J.D. Drew has been a force. He’s hitting .302 with 16 home runs and 51 RBI.
