International Free Agency Starts Today

The international free agent signing period starts today. This is essentially for Latin American players who are 16 (or will turn 16) between now and the end of August.

Some Yankee fans are upset that the organization lost the prize of this year's class, 6-foot-7 right-hander Michael Inoa to Oakland. Apparently the Bomber front office is none-too-pleased either.

According to Baseball America, Abel Guerra, the Yankees’ vice president of international operations, no longer works for the organization.

New York's Internation Free Agent Signings

(Updates to come...)

  • SS Anderson Félix, Dominican Republic ($500,000)
  • INF Giancarlo Arias, Dominican Republic
  • RF Yeico Calderon, Dominican Republic
  • OF Ramon Flores, Venezuela
  • C/3B Jackson Valera, Venezuela

RF Yeico Calderon, Dominican Republic
Calderon is a left-handed, power-hitting right fielder. Having been compared to Cliff Floyd, Calderon can turn on plus fastballs though his rudimentary approach needs refinement. He is an atheletic fielder with a strong arm.
OF Ramon Flores, Venezuela

Flores has shown an advanced hitting ability for scouts, but limited power. He makes hard, consistent contact. He appears to be a tweener: not enough speed to play center, not enough power to play a corner.

INF Giancarlo Arias, Dominican Republic

Currently a shortstop, Arias is a stocky six-footer with a plus arm. His furure likely lies at thirdbase (although secondbase is a possibility). He has good hands and footwork but below-average speed. He's a impressive left-handed bat.

SS Anderson Félix, Dominican Republic

Felix is a hitability shortstop with gap-to-gap power likely moving to second base.

C/3B Jackson Valera, Venezuela

Valera has a very good bat with plus power but no clear position.
