Yankees News and Notes for June 27, 2008

Last Night: Rained Out

The New York Yankees were rained out last night at PNC Park while leading, 3-1, in the top of the third last night following a 21/2-hour delay. After arriving home at 2 o'clock this morning, the Bombers will be at Yankee Stadium a dozen hours later for the first game of a split-stadium, Subway Series doubleheader against the Mets. Six hours later, they will do it again at Shea Stadium. The twinbill will be followed by solo games tomorrow and Sunday in Queens.

Thanks to a May 16 rainout in The Bronx, the all-day festivities start with a 2 p.m. matchup at Yankee Stadium, followed by an 8 p.m. contest 10 miles away at Shea.

Mike Mussina criticized the schedule makers.

George King points out that the Yankees need to make a roster move for Sidney Ponson to pitch today. The likely move? Hideki Matsui to the D.L.

"It's always a possibility," Girardi told King. "You don't want it to come to that, but if it's in the best interest of the club, we will talk about it."

Matsui, who will be evaluated today, said the knee is improving daily and feels that he could DH today in the first game against the Mets at the Stadium. He hasn't played there since June 15.

Jorge Posada and Latroy Hawkins are part of a small but growing group that would like to see Roberto Clemente's No. 21 retired throughout Major League Baseball, as Jackie Robinson's No. 42 is (Newsday - Kat O'Brien).

Clemente spent his entire career with the Pirates from 1955 through 1972, logging his 3,000th hit in the final game of the 1972 season. He died on Dec. 31, 1972, at age 38 when his plane crashed while he was making a humanitarian mission to Nicaragua, bringing food and supplies after an earthquake.

Clemente was a hell of a ballplayer, but there have been many great players in the game. To retire all of their numbers would mean guys wearing three digits across their backs. I think it suffices to have the club they played for retire the number....
