The Road Ahead – Capsules for 6/27-6/29 Series vs. New York Mets

New York Yankees (42-36) vs. New York Mets (38-39)
Today’s two-stadium doubleheader opens a tough stretch for the Yankees. After the Subway Series finishes in Flushing, the Yankees have a homestand that starts with the explosive Rangers and ends with the Red Sox and Rays.

  • RHP Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 4.30) vs. RHP Dan Giese (1-2, 0.64)
Fri 6/27/2008, 8:05pm (Game Two @ Shea Stadium)
  • RHP Sidney Ponson (4-1, 3.88) vs. RHP Pedro Martinez (2-1, 6.57)
Sat 6/28/2008, 3:55pm
  • LHP Andy Pettitte (8-5, 4.04) vs. LHP Johann Santana (7-6, 2.93)
Sun 6/29/2008, 1:10pm
  • RHP Darrell Rasner (4-5, 4.50) vs. LHP Oliver Perez (5-5, 5.29)
This is the third time the Yankees and Mets will play a doubleheader in two different parks on the same day. The Yankees swept the first two twinbills on July 8, 2000 and June 28, 2003.

For the Yankees: Two straight losses to the Mets from May 17-18 dropped the Yankees to 20-24. They lost their next game to Baltimore, but are 22-11 since, moving within 5 1/2 games of first-place Boston in the AL East … Dan Giese (1-2, 0.64) makes his second career start for the Yankees. The right-hander started Saturday in a 6-0 loss to Cincinnati, tossing six scoreless innings before allowing three unearned runs in the seventh as a result of his own throwing error … Making his season debut for the Yankees in the nightcap will be Sidney Ponson (4-1, 3.88), who was signed to a minor league contract on June 18, two days after he was released by Texas. Ponson pitched well for the Rangers, but was designated for assignment following off-the-field incidents that included a disturbance at a hotel bar in Florida.

For the Mets: Pedro Martinez, starting tonight’s second game, has made 31 starts against the Yankees in his career. Martinez is 11-10 with a 3.03 ERA versus the Bombers, last facing them on May 20, 2006 when he threw seven scoreless innings in the Mets' 5-4, 11-inning loss. This season, Martinez has pitched in five games. In 24 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 18 earned runs – on 36 hits (four homers) … David Wright is a career .346 hitter (26-for-75) against the Yankees with six homers and 17 RBIs … Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 4.30 ERA) looks to match a career high by winning his third straight outing when he starts the opener for the Mets. The right-hander has been much better lately, going 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in his last five starts after he went 2-6 with 5.33 ERA in his first nine games.
