The Road Ahead – Capsules for 6/24-6/26 Series vs. Pittsburgh

The Road Ahead – Capsules for 6/24-6/26 Series vs. PittsburghNew York Yankees (41-35) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (36-40)
The New York Yankees enter its match up with the Pirates having won seven of nine from the Astros, Padres and Reds. On deck for New York? A four-game series with the Mets, three against the potent Texas Rangers, four against the Red Sox and two with the Rays. The Yankees should take advantage of Pittsburgh’s poor pitching.

The Pitching Match Ups:
Tue, June 24, 7:05pm
  • RHP Darrell Rasner (4-4, 3.64) vs. LHP Tom Gorzelanny (5-6, 6.59)
Wed, June 25, 7:05pm
  • RHP Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 2.36) vs. LHP Zach Duke (4-4, 3.91)
Thu, June 26, 7:05pm
  • RHP Mike Mussina (10-5, 3.93) vs. LHP Paul Maholm (5-5, 4.41)
For the Yankees: In the previous 10 games (eight wins) New York’s starters were 6-2 with a 1.71 ERA. In 63 1/3 innings they allowed 53 hits, walked 18 and fanned 50 ... New York has the best winning percentage in interleague play (.591) while Pittsburgh has by far the worst at .375 … Alex Rodriguez has a 10-game hitting streak, going 15-for-36 (.417) with four homers and nine RBIs. He is batting .332 on the season … The Yankees have three players with an on base percentage over .400: Rodriguez (.410), Hideki Matsui (.404) and Jason Giambi (.403).

For the Pirates: The have 370 runs in 76 games -- an average of 4.9 -- while the Yankees have scored 351 (4.6 per game) … Pittsburgh’s 5.06 team ERA is the worst in the majors, and the starters’ ERA is 5.41 … Tonight, Pittsburgh sends their most disappointing pitcher to the mound in Tom Gorzelanny (5-6, 6.59 ERA). A 14-game winner last season, Gorzelanny’s ERA has increased by nearly three runs in 2008 … OF Nate McLouth has been a pleasant surprise for the Pirates this season. The 26-year-old is hitting .292 with 15 homers and 51 RBI … Ryan Doumit has been (when healthy) one of the most productive backstops in the league. Doumit is hitting .341 with 9 homers and 22 RBI.

Agreed, the yanks should take advantage of the pirate's weaknesses.
