With their 9th round pick (290th overall), the New York Yankees selected high school right hander Michael O’Brien. The highest high school draft pick in Virginia, O’Brien went 11-1 with a 0.69 ERA this season. With a fastball clocked at 93 mph, O’Brien offers raw stuff, projectability and youth.

He finished his regular season 7-0 with a 0.33 ERA. He struck out better than half the batters he faced (87 of 154), walking only six. Offensively, he belted six home runs and tabbed 30 RBIs.

Having committed to Winthrop, the Yankees will have to convince the youngster to forgo his scholarship and ignore his Red Sox fan loyalty. Though he is not considered to be a tough sign, O’Brien plans to weigh all his options before making his decision

O’Brien has diabetes, a non-issue according to Yankees scout Scott Lovekamp.

"It's something we can adjust to," Lovekamp told the Roanoke Times. "The biggest credit goes to Mikey because he's been able to adjust to it."

In other draft news, 5th-round pick Chris Smith for slot money ($158,000). Yankees scout David Keith told Peter Abraham that Smith had unusual strike-zone discipline for a player his age and could drive the ball to all fields. He did not play against a high level of competition, however.
