Hometown: Lake Mary, Fla.

STATUS: Signed, Reporting to GCL Yankees (Rookie).

RHP Matthew Richardson, Lake Mary (Florida) HS (470th Overall)With its 15th selection in the 2008 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected prep right-hander Matthew Richardson. A considerable signability case, Richardson is a projectable, two-way prospect with high draft potential.

Having committed to the University of Central Florida, it will likely take a substantial financial investment to reign in the high schooler.

Richardson also played shortstop at Lake Mary HS. He is tall with an athletic build, runs well and is a strong defender. On the mound, Richardson has flashes a plus, late-life low-90s fastball and tight spin curveball – thrown from a high ¾ arm slot. His athleticism translates well to the mound with an effortless delivery and easy arm action.

Matt Richardson hadn’t pitched extensively on the high school level until this past season, when he was 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA. He struck out 67 and walked 27 in 50 2/3 innings.
