Gulf Coast League Yankees Preview

Gulf Coast League Yankees PreviewJust two days after our Staten Island Yankees (New York-Penn League Preview), we are at it again.

The Gulf Coast League Yankees were all set to open its season today, but Mother Nature failed to cooperate. The Yankees were slated for a noon match up with the Indian’s GCL club but due to rain, the contest was postponed.

Traditionally, the Gulf Coast League, is the first top for high school draft picks, and young Latin American players who have played in the Dominican or Venezuelan Summer Leagues. The Yankees have sent several recent draftees to the Yankee Complex in Tampa, including: SS Corban Joseph, LF Christopher Smith, 1B Mitch Delaney and LHP Clint Preisendorfer.

Players to Watch
Joseph (4th round pick) and Smith (5th round pick) will be two players to keep tabs on. Both are considered left handed power bats. It will be fun to see what kind of numbers they put up. Delaney, another lefty, is also a potential power bat.

Third baseman-turned-outfielder Andres Dionicio was the Yankees big ticket International signee in 2004. After struggling in his first season with the Dominican Summer League, he's shown promise. It will be interesting to see how he fares in his first full season in the GCL.

Other Notes
Jody Reed returns as manager of the New York Yankees’ entry in Tampa. His club won the league’s 2007 champiohsip.

This is the 45th season of Gulf Coast Rookie League Play.

The divisional lineups for the 16-team league are the same as 2007. Joining the Yankees in the Northern Division are Atlanta (Disney World), Cleveland (Winter Haven), Detroit (Lakeland), Toronto (Dunedin), and Philadelphia (Clearwater).
